How Brakes Work

Your brakes work using hydraulic force and friction. When you press the brake pedal, a level and piston force brake fluid from the master cylinder through lines/hoses to the smaller cylinder that's located near each wheel. The fluid force then moves the brake caliper, causing the attached brake pad to contact the rotor. That's the large disc that sits inside each wheel. The friction between the pad and rotor allows you to stop your vehicle. As described, this model depicts the disc brakes found at least on the front of nearly all modern cars. Older automobiles and the rear wheels of some newer ones have drum brakes, providing a balance between improved ability to stop the heavier weight of the engine in front and the production cost differential between disc and drum brakes.

Specific Problems with Braking

Any increase in stopping distances or abnormal operation of brakes should be taken seriously. The most common problem is worn brake pads. As these wear thin, proper friction with the rotor to make a timely stop may not exist. You may begin to hear squealing when you apply brakes, a warning that it's time to change the brake pads. Low brake fluid levels are also cause for concern. If your braking system lacks a sufficient amount of fluid, the pedal may feel spongy to the touch or it may seem to sink too far toward the floor. Warped rotors, usually a result of excessive, prolonged overheating, can cause intermittent contact with the brake pads. The rotor should be smooth and evenly thick so that the pad makes continuous contact. Warping decreases contact time, possibly impeding your stopping ability. Other issues that interfere with braking/stopping aren't actually related to the brakes themselves. Tire conditions such as worn treads that reduce traction can be problematic. Also, be aware that slick road conditions resulting from weather conditions like rain or icing decrease your ability to stop. If you must travel during bad weather, you should drive slowly and allow extra time for braking. Although we can't control the weather, the Provision Automotive team can certainly help with the mechanical condition of your car. Maintain your ability to stop safely by scheduling an appointment for brake repair with us today.
